Shree Chattampi Swamikal

Jayanthi: August 25, 1853

Samadhi: May 9, 1924

Shree Vidyadhiraja, Parama Bhattaraka {Abhivandya} Chattampi Swamikal was a great spiritual leader and a Self realized person like ancient Rishis. He is believed to be an incarnation of Shivan. Swamikal lived between 1853 and 1924. Being an enlightened and highly spiritual entity, Swamikal had not only introduced a number of persons through out Keralam and outside to spirituality but also protected and strengthened our Spiritual Science or Sanathana Dharmam, as it is known. He also enriched the ancient Bharatheeya Culture. He initiated number of spiritual seekers through out Keralam and outside to various methods of spiritual practices. Swamikal was also a social reformer and worked hard to free the society from blind beliefs, superstitions and useless rituals. Swamikal, through studies he made in the spiritual science with an emphasis to VedaaH, history, language, music and linguistics, enriched the life of every one. He was also a great musician.

He was a scholar with a multi-talented personality and his divine powers were famous all around the state of Keralam. His mortal body was buried in the conventional religious system of 'Samadhi' and the 'Samadhistanam' became a temple with an Ashram (Panmana Ashram) for service and spiritual practices.

Panmana Ashram

Panmana Ashram has been acknowledged to be a unique and sacred center of learning and service, which has had the divine presence of SHREE VIDYADHIRAJAN CHATTAMPI SWAMIKAL and SREE MAHA THRIPURASUNDARI DEVI. Panmana Ashram located 18 Kilometers North of Kollam city, adjacent to the National Highway 47, is the MAHASAMADHI PEEDOM of Shree Chattampi Swamikal. The late Shri Kumbalathu Shanku Pillai, an ardent devotee of Swamikal, founded the Ashram in its present form. Kumbalathu Shanku Pillai was a great freedom fighter, political luminary and social reformer with a powerful personality. Under his leadership, Shree Balabhattarakeswarasram Trust was constituted in December 1938.

Panmana Ashram is situated in a placid and peaceful atmosphere in the midst of lush coconut palms and paddy fields. Because of its simple and serene surroundings, the Ashram had been a pilgrim center - a veritable rural paradise for the past 75 years attracting thousands of people from all over the world. Several great men had visited this place and enjoyed the quiet and enlightening atmosphere. Even Mahatma Gandhi had visited the Ashram and stayed for two days spending the time in prayers and contemplation. The spiritually vibrant and tranquil atmosphere of the Ashram had deep impact on him. A perfect tranquility prevails in the whole area - an atmosphere charged with the divine presence of Paramabhattara Sree Vidyadhiraja Chattampi Swamikal, believed to be an incarnation lord Siva, the Yogi of Yogis.

The Ashram has Brahmacharins and Sannyasins undergoing studies and research in fields of spiritual fields with special emphasis on VedaaH, PuraaNaaH and Samskritham language and literature.

The ultimate realization of truth can be made possible to the disciples in this calm, peaceful and heavenly atmosphere with proper study and efforts. The Ashram is a place with a spiritual scholar who occupies the seat of 'Guru'. Seekers from all around the world come and study at the Ashram under his guidance to acquire the divine knowledge.

Some of the messages of Shree Chattampi Swamikal

Thought should precede every action of yours. Avoid boastful thoughts about your physical achievements and material accumulations. Contemplate over the ultimate reality of existence. That alone will give meaning to life. The whole universe is the manifestation of the Absolute One. The apparent differences between objects are only an illusion. An understanding of this truth will lead to liberation. Light a lamp; set a bowl of fragrant flowers before it; fix the image of the goddess in your mind; gently and tunefully chant the thousand names of Devi Lalitha (Lalitha Sahsranaamam). No wish of yours will remain unfulfilled.

Vegetarianism

Abstain from eating the flesh of dead creatures. Living organisms are to be loved, not eaten. Vegetarians are perhaps not totally non-violent. But they are certainly a few notches above the flesh-eaters in the ladder of non-violence. Non-vegetarianism is good neither for the mind nor for the intellect, nor even of the body. Saints and spiritual masters have invariably advocated vegetarianism. Non-vegetarianism distorts the basic character of man. This universe is the manifestation of but one mind. Alienation between one mind and another mind is unnatural. The mind of man is in no way different from the mind of any other creature. Love an insect, and it can be seen that it reciprocates. Salvation is the ultimate outcome of non-violence.

Equality and Caste System

Discrimination between human beings; It is high time that we tossed those imagined differences between man and man into the Arabian Sea.

Knowledge

Knowledge is as essential for human existence as food. Nobody should be denied access to knowledge

Women

Supremacy of woman over man is an unquestionable fact.

Enslavement of woman is a manifestation of male arrogance. It is against all canons of justice and ethics. It is criminal and immoral.

Woman cannot be faltered by any power in the world. She is the symbol of the creative force and the presiding deity of the universe. --
